Port Arthur Historic Site

Winner of the 2005 Tasmanian Tourism Awards, Major Tourist Attraction and Heritage and Cultural Tourism.
Port Arthur is the most intact and evocative historic prison in Australia. It covers 98 hectares (242 acres) around picturesque Mason Cove and has many ruined and restored buildings set in gardens and rolling lawns. You can join a guided tour with an experienced and knowledgeable guide, or follow your own inclinations and explore the Site at your own pace.
The two most impressive buildings on site, the Penitentiary and the Separate Prison, show how convict discipline changed from physical to psychological terror. Stand as the convicts did in the cubicles of the Chapel or in the total silence and darkness of the punishment cell and imagine their sufferings. In the furnished military and civilian homes you can see where the free community whiled away the long, dark evenings.
Wander through the reconstructed Government Gardens (originally established in 1858) as only the free folk of the settlement could. In the summer months, you can also take a special garden tour. Your entry price includes a harbour cruise on the 24-metre (78 foot) catamaran ferry, except August when the boat is in dry dock. For a small additional fee you can also visit the convict-period cemetery on the tiny Isle of the Dead and Point Puer where, between 1834 and 1849, 3,000 boys aged from nine to 18 years were imprisoned the first boys' prison in the British Empire.
By night, if you are brave enough, you can explore the site and learn about its ghosts on a lantern-lit tour. First, have dinner at Felons restaurant and then head out for the 90-minute experience. The Visitor Centre has a gift shop, a cafe and Interpretation Gallery where you follow the story of particular convicts imprisoned for crimes large and small.
